What Is Masterbatch?

Masterbatch is a concentrated mixture of pigment or additive encapsulated in a carrier resin, pelletized for easy dosing into a base polymer during processing. It lets manufacturers add colour or function without handling raw pigment powder, which is messier and harder to dose accurately.

White Masterbatch

White masterbatch, typically based on titanium dioxide, is used to achieve opacity and brightness in products like packaging film, pipes and containers - and is also the base many colour masterbatches build on for lighter shades.

Black Masterbatch

Black masterbatch, usually carbon-black based, is one of the most widely used types across industries, valued for opacity, UV protection and consistent deep colour in products ranging from pipes to automotive parts to packaging.

Colour & Additive Masterbatch

Colour masterbatch delivers custom Pantone or RAL-matched shades for branding consistency, while additive masterbatch delivers a functional benefit - UV stability, antistatic performance, flame retardancy or slip properties - without colour being the primary purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Masterbatch Types Explained, answered by the Siya Polymer technical team.

Masterbatch pre-disperses pigment in a carrier resin as convenient pellets, offering more accurate, consistent and cleaner dosing than handling loose pigment powder directly.

Carbon-black based masterbatch does offer some UV screening benefit in addition to colour, which is one reason it's popular for outdoor-exposed products like pipes and crates.

Yes, colour masterbatch can typically be custom-formulated to match a specific Pantone, RAL or physical colour sample for brand consistency.

Typical letdown ratios range from about 1-4% for colour masterbatch, though this varies by carrier resin, pigment strength and desired shade intensity.
