PBT Compounds for Electrical Components - Siya Polymer

What Is PBT?

Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic valued for its excellent electrical insulation properties, low moisture absorption, good dimensional stability and resistance to heat and many chemicals - properties that align closely with electrical component requirements.

Why Glass-Filled PBT Is Common

Unfilled PBT has moderate strength, so most electrical and connector applications use glass fibre reinforced grades (commonly 15-30% glass), which significantly increase stiffness, strength and heat deflection temperature while retaining good electrical performance.

Flame-Retardant PBT Grades

Many PBT applications in electrical housings and connectors require specific UL94 flammability ratings; flame-retardant PBT compounds are formulated to meet these standards without significantly compromising mechanical or electrical properties.

Typical Applications

PBT compounds are used in connectors, circuit breaker housings, switch components, automotive electrical parts, and precision moulded parts requiring tight tolerances and long-term dimensional stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about PBT Compounds, answered by the Siya Polymer technical team.

PBT offers significantly better dimensional stability, heat resistance and mechanical strength than PP, which matters for connectors that must maintain precise tolerances under thermal cycling.

Most connector-grade PBT compounds use 15-30% glass fibre reinforcement, depending on the required strength and stiffness.

Yes, PBT has relatively low moisture absorption compared to nylon, which helps it maintain more consistent dimensions and electrical properties in humid environments.

Yes, flame-retardant PBT compounds are available to meet common UL94 V-0 and V-2 ratings required in many electrical applications.
